Вперше в Україні, з 10 по 27 червня в Галереї Київської Школи Фотографії пройде фотовиставка всесвітньо відомого американського портретиста Джока Сторджеса.
Ось уже 50 років фотохудожник знімає оголену натуру на узбережжях Каліфорнії, Франції та Ірландії. Природний світ - вірний друг фотографа. Саме він дозволяє автору показати в своїх роботах більше, ніж тіло. Його моделі, незалежно від віку, сяють внутрішнім світлом і спокоєм. Вони уважно дивляться на глядача, вимагають згадати щось дуже важливе. Те, що кожен з нас може втратити, коли безжальний час виганяє нас із Раю дитинства і юності. Внутрішня свобода, краса, молодість його моделей надихають фотохудожника протягом усього життя.
«Краса в очах того, хто споглядає». Це правило працює в будь-якому виді мистецтва. І фотографія - не виняток. Як і в живописі, тут багато залежить від особистого досвіду і життєвих цінностей відвідувача галереї. Від візуального досвіду, від наміру читати смисли, а не лише сприймати естетику. І цей момент набуває особливої актуальності, коли ми говоримо про естетику оголеного тіла, яка часто несе в собі далеко не лише цінність форми і ліній.
Портрети Сторджеса нікого не залишають байдужим. Саме тому його роботи включені до колекцій 33 музеїв Світу, серед яких Музей сучасного мистецтва (MoMA), Метрополітен-музей у Нью-Йорку, Національна бібліотека в Парижі і Франкфуртський музей сучасного мистецтва в Німеччині.
Джок Сторджес лише 5 років тому перейшов на Leica. До цього усі його фотографії були зроблені на повноформатну камеру формату 8x10 дюймів (20x25 сантиметрів). Навіть більшість комерційних fashion робіт. Сюжети зображень нагадують класичний живопис дев'ятнадцятого і початку двадцятого століть і багаті текстурами, деталями, фізичними і психологічними нюансами.
Більше робіт Джока Сторджеса любителі фотографії зможуть побачити в липні, на наступній виставці в Галереї Київської Школи Фотографії. Це 30 авторських знімків періоду 1970-2018 років, 10 з яких будуть продані на благодійному аукціоні в підтримку військових лікарів для боротьби з COVID-19.
Також його творчість відображено на сторінках 16 авторських каталогів серед яких The Last Day of Summer (1992), Radiant Identities (1994), 25 Years (1994), Evolutions of Grace (1994), Jock Sturges (1996), Jock Sturges - New Work 1996-2000 (2000), and Notes (2005), The Leica (2018).
Післямова. Чи має оголене тіло право на душу?
У людському суспільстві оголене тіло, особливо жіноче, перестало бути чимось сакральним. Його зображення все частіше має явний сексуальний підтекст і об’єктивується, або є товаром. Але так було не завжди. Свою сакральність, яку добре відчували римляни і греки, тіло втратило в темні століття, коли християнство поставило на ньому тавро гріховності і зла. Сучасна європейська культура парадоксальним чином успадковує обидва ставлення до тіла. Саме тому, глядач Джока Сторджеса може відчути збентеження, гублячись у визначеннях між поняттями «досконалість» , «краса», «грація», «чуттєвість», «еротизм», «порнографія».
У вересні 2016 року Центр фотографії імені братів Люм'єр привіз безцінні роботи Джока Сторджеса до Москви. Виставка протрималася лише дві тижні і була зірвана зусиллями радикально-налаштованих російських націоналістів.
З цього моменту для будь-якого суспільства виставка Джока Сторджеса є ефективним тестом на рівень культури та толерантності в крові нації. Глядачу, будь Українцем!

It’s the first time when His works arrives to Ukraine and will be exposed in the gallery of Kyiv Photography School.
For the last 50 years the artist has been shooting naturists on the beaches of California, France and Ireland. Natural light has always been Jock’s best friend. Natural light makes it possible for the author to show more than just a naked body in his photos. His models, despite the age, are glowing with inner light and tranquility. They are looking at the viewer carefully, as if reminding of something really important. Something that each of us can lose when rigorous time exiles us from Heaven of childhood and youth. Inner freedom, beauty, youth of his models have been inspiring photographer throughout his life.
«Beauty is in the eye of the beholder» people say. This rule is applicable in any art. And photography is not an exception. In visual art a lot depends on personal experience and life values of a gallery visitor. On his experience in art-study, on the intention to read senses between the lines but not only percept esthetics. All this becomes extremely important when discussion of a naked body start, brining to the surface much more than just a value of form and lines.
Portraits made by Jock Sturges touch your feelings. This is the reason why his works are included into collections of 33 museums of the world among which MoMA, Metropolitan museum in New York, National library in Paris and Museum of Modern Art in Frankfurt, Germany.
The Majority of the portraits were made with the help of a cumbersome full frame format camera (8x10 inch). But digital negatives of this very exhibition were made by a legendary Leica. Subjects of his images remind you of classic canvases of 19th –beginning of 20th centuries and are exuberant in textures, details, physical and psychological nuances.
The artlife of the photographer is depicted on the pages of 16 original catalogues among which are The Last Day of Summer (1992), Radiant Identities (1994), 25 Years (1994), Evolutions of Grace (1994), Jock Sturges (1996), Jock Sturges - New Work 1996-2000 (2000), and Notes (2005), The Leica (2018).
Epilogue. Does naked body have the right to have a soul?
In human society naked body, especially female one, stopped being something devine. More and more often it is depicted with the unhidden sexual implication, is objectivized or simply is presented like a product. But it wasn’t always like this. Its sacred nature proclaimed by the Greeks and the Romans, our body lost in centuries of darkness. When Christianity gibbeted it with the stigma of evil and depravity. Surprisingly enough, modern European culture comes after both contradictory ways of treating the human body. That can be the reason why Sturges’ viewer might experience an odd mixture of ideas from perfection, beauty, grace, sensuality, to erotics and porn when looking at photos.
In September 2016 Lumier brothers Center of photography in Moscow brought precious works of Jock Sturges to the city. Exhibition managed to survive for only 2 weeks and was disrupted due to the radical nationalists.
From that moment any exhibition of Jock Sturges artworks is a kind of litmus paper for the level of tolerance and culture in a nation’s blood. So, viewer, be Ukrainian in your attitude to art!
